Our Online Reflection Journal

We will be writing about what we have learned online. This is a place where you can read at home and discuss what you are learning with your family.

All kinds of weather

Today we learned that:
  • weather changes in different seasons
  • weather can be powerful or weaker in different seasons
  • in winter, snowy is most powerful and sunny is weaker
  • in summer, sunny is most powerful and windy is weaker
  • snow is actually rain that has frozen from cold wind in the clouds

We used our bodies to show different types of weather like a raindrop falling gently and then falling heavily after it has frozen to become snow.

Check out our pictures!

The Seasons

Today we learned that:

  • Earth spins around the Sun
  • The Sun does not move
  • The Sun never disappears
  • Sometimes the rain in the clouds gets very heavy
  • Sometimes all seasons can have the same weather (e.g., partly cloudy)
  • Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter can share the same kind of weather
  • It takes the Earth 365 days to travel around the entire Sun
  • Here are some weather words we learned today: windy, partly cloudy, sunny, rainy, mild, snowy, stormy

Weather Across the Seasons

Here are some pictures that show us working on the Smartboard trying to understand the weathers across the seasons:

Today we learned that:

  • when the seasons change, the weather changes too

  • the Earth has a cycle of seasons

  • if the seasons did not change, then we could not survive

  • people and other living things change too to survive

  • animals make decisions to fly away to a warmer place

  • we read the book The Little Yellow Leaf and learned that in Fall, there is wind that helps the leaves fall on the ground.

We then created a dance for the leaf falling down. We used the movement words: hanging on, dancing, twirling and then ending on the ground. You can watch our dance below:

Video of Sun and Earth

October 27, 2010

Today, we learned about the sun and the earth.
The Earth spins around itself. The sun does not move.
When the Earth is facing the Sun, it is summer.
When the Earth is facing away from the sun, it is winter.
During spring and fall, the earth is not facing the sun, but not facing away from the sun either. It is somewhere in the middle of the sun.
The Earth doesn't do other kinds of moving, it just spins.
The sun stays but the earth moves.
The Earth moves in a cycle.

Today we learned about what the Earth does to create day and night, and how the seasons are made.

We looked at a picture of the sun and the Earth. We learned that the sun is so much BIGGER than the Earth! We also learned that the sun does not move. We also saw that the Earth travels around the sun, making day and night as it turns around.

With a partner, we took turns being the Earth and the sun. We used our bodies to spin around the sun like the Earth does, to make day and night.

The Earth and sun also make the seasons. When the Earth tilts toward the sun, we have summer and feel warmer (more sun). When the Earth tilts away from the sun, we have winter and feel colder (less sun). With our bodies as the Earth, we tilted towards the sun and away from the sun to show how the Earth makes these seasons.

Look at our amazing learning!

The Sun

Today we learned about the Sun.
We learned that the sun:
  • gives us light
  • gives us warmth
  • helps plants make food
  • helps everything grow

We also learned some Sun Safety Rules because some of the Sun's rays, called ultra-violet rays (UV rays) are very, very strong:

  • we should wear sunglasses to protect our eyes
  • even with sunglasses, we should not stare right into the sun
  • we should put sunscreen on when outside on a sunny day

Today, we also learned how to use the different parts of our body to create the Sun. We learned that we can use our body to show power. Some of us learned that pointing our fingers, stretching our arms and controlling the muscles in our face can help show power. Watch the videos below that show us trying to understand the power of the sun by using our body.
